Timeline additions

Postby bump on Fri Jun 13, 2008 2:52 pm

Greetings All,
To anyone who has an event that they feel should be listed on the timeline, please send it to me
jayhinnershitz@yahoo.com
and I will post it.
We are constantly making additions to the timeline, and we are adding as much as we can find......and we could use your help.
Also, if you have an image, article, etc. that helps to support your listing and would like it included, please send it along, and I will link the listing to the image, or post in within the timeline....with that stated, please be aware that any listing in the timelines that is underlined is a link....either to an image, or an article.
As stated on the various pages, we would like to make this the most comprehensive, complete Checkers/Draughts timeline ever produced on the game, an arduous task ......and we WILL utilize anything that you send us. We will also list you in the contributors panel on the homepage.
Thanx to all.....

Regards

Time lines - 1800's - The Mitchell Library

Postby liam stephens on Sun Jun 15, 2008 6:44 pm

Hi Jay,

Re the item about the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, the Hillhouse Collection of Draughts/Checkers books has been preserved and does in fact reside there.

See message below which I received from Chris Reekie.

Regards - Liam.

Dear Liam,
To answer your question, the Hillhouse Collection is still in the Mitchell Library, and I think it comes under their special collections. A list of the items was compiled several years ago and should be available from the library. I have a copy. The list is extensive and is split into sections headed books, periodicals, and games. The books include Anderson, Drummond, Hay, and Sinclair and there are 178 items. Periodicals number 42 items, including all the volumes of Draughts World, 16 volumes of cuttings from the Glasgow Weekly Herald, and several volumes of cuttings from the Leeds papers. The 54 items under games cover the top players. I've visited the Mitchell several times and found it useful. Fortunately for me, I discovered that the National Library of Scotland here in Edinburgh has a complete set of the Draughts World, which has saved me having to travel to Glasgow.

Liam,
I have tried to scan the article on the Mitchell Library, but my copy of Draughts World is bound too tight to get a complete scan.
If any forumites have an unbound copy of Draughts World from June, 1898, and can scan and e-mail to me the Main first page article on Hillhouse's sale of his library to the Mitchell library, I will post it on the site.........
