1974 US Tournament Photo

1974 US Tournament Photo

A very nice find, that photograph, including Oldbury, Ricca and others.
However, I would question the identity of Dennis Beadell, as the person standing behind Oldbury. The image does not resemble the Dennis
I recall. I knew Dennis quite well having played, and lost to, him in the final of the English Amateur championship in the early 1970s.
Dennis did accompany Derek on that trip to the US and participated in some of the tys there.

1974 US Ty Photo

Postby liam stephens on Fri Aug 15, 2008 8:00 pm

Hi Jay,

Very interesting background information, I see the picture was sent in by Richard Fortman. Perhaps he could shed some light on the the Dennis Beadell identification.

Regards - Liam.

Liam,
As you can see, the photo is "taped" to the page itself....perhaps I should "peel" the photo off the page and see what is written on the backside...?
Ken Lovell also stated that he is not sure of this being Beadell ....I do not know Mr. Beadell myself...so cannot be sure.
Any help from anyone appreciated...

UPDATE !!!!

I have been contacted by the family of Dennis Beadell.....indeed, the man standing behind Derek Oldbury IS NOT Dennis Beadell. So, one mystery is solved, but another is created.....who is the man in the photo ??
I am sure it must have been somebody familiar with Derek, as I cannot believe just any swinging Tom, Dick or Harry could take the liberty of leaning over Derek for a photographed to be taken.
It is of course to late to question Dick Fortman....but, I know Dick to have been very detailed in anything he did.
This erroneous information regarding the identification of the persons in the photo must have been given to Fortman by someone else......that is the only possible explanation.

If anyone can identify the man in the photo, please e-mail me
jayhinnershitz@yahoo.com
and I will update the Exhibit.

Thanx
